GREAT NEWS for 2009..........

2009 BII Licensee Of The Year Unveiled – Philip Davison Is officially Britain’s Best Publican!

Philip Davison of The Sun in the Wood in Ashmore Green, Newbury, was crowned 2009 BII Licensee of the Year at the glittering Publican Awards ceremony – affectionately known as the industry “Oscars” – held in London on Tuesday.

The results of the award remained a secret until the ceremony and all six finalists were invited to attend in anticipation of the big announcement. A delighted Philip (51) was presented with his award by legendary entertainer Des O’Connor, who hosted the evening, along with Martin Grant, chairman of BII, and Ian Smith, commercial director for award sponsor Matthew Clark. Philip’s success was witnessed and celebrated by over 1,500 attendees from the licensed retail industry.

Being crowned BII Licensee of the Year is probably the most prestigious accolade available in the on trade. The award is organised by BII, the professional body for the licensed retail sector, and BII Chief Executive Neil Robertson congratulated Philip on his outstanding success in the industry to date. Neil commented: “Philip is clearly a highly professional, dedicated and well organised operator. Not only is he an excellent example of the cream of the crop among licensees, he regards himself very much as a businessman and would shine out against any small business in any sector.”

Philip has been a licensee for 24 years and, with his wife Lauren, has been running The Sun in the Wood as Wadworth tenants for 12 years. In that time, the pair have grown the business by more than 600% - an incredible achievement which is testament to their enthusiasm, customer focus, marketing savvy and sound business philosophy.

Philip employs 18 staff, all of which he puts through a programme of training and he keeps his own skills updated as part of his ethos of continuous professional development (CPD). Philip himself is a business consultant, working with pubs up and down the country, and also trains on behalf of Wadworth.

Highlights from The Sun in the Wood’s business model include a privilege club to which 500 customers have signed up, mid-week discounted meal offers and a 9-hole crazy golf course, which turned a dark and damp corner of the garden into a money spinner.

Judges commended Philip for his very sound grasp of issues affecting the industry, saying that his long experience in the industry allows him to view them with a good historical perspective and use his knowledge as a sound foundation for looking into the future.

They also felt that Philip will be an excellent ambassador for BII and for the industry, saying that he “demonstrably buys into the BII ethos of CPD – putting himself and his staff through BIIAB and other qualifications. His role as a consultant to other pubs – and as a trainer for Wadworth – doesn't just benefit third parties, it keeps him fresh and keen to spot new ideas.”

Philip also won over the judges with the fact that he is enthusiastic and convincing about licensed retailing as a worthy profession for the brightest and the best of the next generation.

Philip received £1000 in prize money to donate to a charity of his choice plus a case of wine to auction for charity, courtesy of award sponsor Matthew Clark. He now has the opportunity to use the exclusive 2009 BII Licensee of the Year logo, and the status associated with winning.

Ian Smith of Matthew Clark added his congratulations to Philip: “We are very proud to sponsor this award as, not only is it the most sought-after among publicans, it gives us an opportunity to reward the hard work and dedication in the trade.

“All finalists wowed the judges with their expertise, professionalism and commitment. It was a close run competition right to the last but Philip’s breadth of knowledge and length of experience gave him the edge”.
